the Sukkah gets a modern day redesign
“Twelve architects compete to redesign the ritual holiday hut…A village of high-concept lean-tos is about to sprout in Union Square. The gathering of bulbous and bristling huts, variously built out of rattan, grass, wire, cardboard, hemp, and wooden slats, may resemble a camp for design-conscious refugees. In fact, it’s a group of avant-garde sukkahs, the devotional huts that observant Jews erect each fall in commemoration of the desert days, when their ancestors were homeless nomads…” —via NY Mag
The 12 winning Sukkah City designs will be on view at Union Square in NYC starting September 19th. Only the winning entry will be on display for the full week of Sukkot and up through October 2nd.
